My Little Earthquakes

So, the other day, my daughter and I were in the car going to a doctor’s appointment two hours away.  Usually I allow her to pick the music, but this time I was in the mood to listen to a little Tori Amos.  My daughter likes Tori as well, so she put on the “Little Earthquakes” cd.

It got me thinking that pretty much every single song on this album I could some how relate to in my life.  So, here it is: My Little Earthquakes.

Crucify

Nothing I do is good enough for you

Growing up with a low self-esteem is really difficult when all you want to do in life is to please everyone.

Girl

And in the mist there she rides and castles are burning in my heart and as I twist I hold tight

I had a best friend in high school who I haven’t seen or heard from since and this song has always reminded me of her.

Silent All These Years

So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts what’s so amazing about really deep thoughts

For all the guys that decided someone else was more important to them than I was.

Precious Things

No one dared no one cared to tell me where the pretty girls are those demigods with their nine-inch nails and little fascist panties

I was bullied pretty ruthlessly in elementary school until I finally stood up for myself.

Winter

When you gonna make up your mind when you gonna love you as much as I do when you gonna make up your mind cause things are gonna change so fast

This song has always reminded me of my relationship with my father and how much I love him.

Happy Phantom

Or will I see you dear and wish I could come back you found a girl that you could truly love again will you still call for me when she falls asleep or do we soon forget the things we cannot see

I really just love this song!  It’s so upbeat, but with a really serious meaning.

China

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you. How can I when you build the great wall around you

Sometimes you can be so alone even when someone is sitting right next to you.

Leather

I could just pretend that you love me the night would lose all sense of fear

Hanging on to a relationship for fear of being alone is a bad thing.  Everyone must learn to live with themselves and love themselves so that they are never in a position of staying with someone for the wrong reasons.

Mother

He’s gonna change my name maybe you’ll leave the light on

Perhaps I’m weird, but this is the song I walked down the aisle to when I got married.

Tear In Your Hand

I think it’s that girl and I think they’re pieces of me you’ve never seen maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen well”

We were sitting in my car when he told me that he didn’t love me anymore.  It was raining outside and all I could think about was this song and how it so appropriately fit how I was feeling at that moment in time.

Me And A Gun

But I haven’t seen Barbados so I must get out of this

We all either know someone or are someone who has been the victim of a sexual assault.  It is important to speak up.  It is important to make this abuse stop.  Please support RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network).

Little Earthquakes

Give me life Give me pain Give me myself again

I’ve been through a lot in my life and somehow I have made it through it all.  We are all capable of surviving all the Little Earthquakes that enter our lives on a daily basis.  It only serves to make us stronger.

Twisted Mix Tape #MiddleSchoolAwkward – Jr High in the 80s

I was in Middle School in 1986, 1987 and 1988, so I am going to focus on those years for this MixTape, but I’m also going to incorporate this with a Summer Playlist inspired by Mama Kat, so they are going to be songs specifically released in the summers of those years.

The first song is going to be from the “Slippery When Wet” album by Bon Jovi which was released on August 18, 1986.  I absolutely adore the entire album, but “Never Say Goodbye” always reminded me of my friends:

“True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper was released on September 15, 1986.  This song always seems to make me cry.  It’s so emotional.

On July 21, 1987 Guns N’ Roses released their album, “Appetite for Destruction”.  I am in love with this album, but I specifically love “Sweet Child O’ Mine”:

And who can forget Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me” from their “Hysteria” album which was released on August 3, 1987.

Released in August of 1988 was Proclaimers “I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)” from their “Sunshine on Leith” album.  I always loved this song.

And just for pure fun (I love the current commercial with this song in it), here is “Push It” by Salt-N-Pepa which was released on their “A Salt with a Deadly Pepa” album on August 2, 1988:

Twisted MixTape 37: I don’t just love you; I’m addicted to you!

This mix was a bit more difficult for me since I had already done a mix about Obsession for Twisted MixTape 32 and I didn’t really want to repeat songs so close to each other.  Therefore, I hope you enjoy what I have come up with for this week’s MixTape.

Do What You Have to Do – Sarah McLachlan

“and I have the sense to recognize that
I don’t know how to let you go”

Addicted to Love – Robert Palmer

The entire song is about being addicted to love, so printing any portion of the lyrics would just be redundant.

Never Say Goodbye – Bon Jovi

“Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end
Say goodbye, never say goodbye
Holdin’ on – we got to try
Holdin’ on to never say goodbye”

Hands Clean – Alanis Morrisette

“Ooh this could be messy
But you don’t seem to mind
Ooh don’t go telling everybody
And overlook this supposed crime”

Truly Madly Deeply – Savage Garden

“I’ll be your dream
I’ll be your wish I’ll be your fantasy
I’ll be your hope I’ll be your love
Be everything that you need
I’ll love you more with every breath
Truly, madly, deeply do”

The Rules:  Five songs. Stick to the theme (as best you can). Check out the other players (everyone wants to share their tunes with you). Create a mix, not a “hey look at all the cool songs I know” we’re not snobs, if you were our best bud and you were gonna make us a tape, what would it be? And share this party so more people will play next week!

Twisted MixTape 36: Christmas Playlist

It is officially OK to be listening to Christmas Music now! Bring it on! Maybe we’ll find some new favorite Christmas tunes for our holiday playlists!

In an effort to try to get into the Christmas spirit, I’ve been listening to Christmas songs that I haven’t heard before and songs sung by artists I haven’t listened to before.  I hope that you like my compilation of what I have found:

God is With Us by Casting Crowns

“I feel compelled to tell all who will listen
That peace on earth is not so out of reach
If we can find grace and mercy and forgiveness
He has come to save, He is all of these”

Face of Love by Jewel

“in silence i feared my heart
would remain words unheard
inside a separateness of skin
but now i know that the skin just veils the soul”

Angels We Have Heard on High by Josh Groban

Little Drummer Boy by Lonestar

Silent Night by Sinead O’Connor

Well, I hope you enjoyed my MixTape.  Don’t forget to link up with your own Mix.  Happy Holidays!

I’m going to cheat a little and add one more.  This is not officially a Christmas song, but Whovians will understand why I’ve included it here.

Twisted MixTape 35: Things Ya Might Get Busted For In Real Life

I’m a little late, but I wanted to get mine in here.  🙂

Things Ya Might Get Busted For In Real Life

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

“Mama, just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead.
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I’ve gone and thrown it all away.”

Janie’s Got a Gun by Aerosmith

“She had to take him down easy and put a bullet in his brain
She said ’cause nobody believes me. The man was such a sleaze.
He ain’t never gonna be the same.”

Sunny Came Home by Shawn Colvin

“Get the kids and bring a sweater
Dry is good and wind is better
Count the years, you always knew it
Strike a match, go on and do it”

Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks

“Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one
You thought you’d see there
And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you
Said, “Honey, we may be through
But you’ll never hear me complain””

The Waitress by Tori Amos

“So I want to kill this waitress
She’s worked here a year longer than I
If I did it fast you know that’s an act of kindness”

These are the rules. Five songs. Stick to the theme (as best you can). Check out the other players (everyone wants to share their tunes with you). Create a mix, not a “hey look at all the cool songs I know” we’re not snobs, if you were our best bud and you were gonna make us a tape, what would it be? Twisted MixTape 34: Your Cheating Heart

This week’s MixTape Theme is Cheating Songs.

Caution:  This is NOT a family friendly MixTape.  Explicit Lyrics.

I’m not entirely certain this first song fits the category, but I always interpreted it as a song about infidelity.  Particularly the lines:

“Never wanted to see things your way,
Had to go astray
For why was I such a fool (Why was I such a fool)
Now I see that the grass is greener
Is it too late for me to find my way home,
How could I be so wrong?”

All Cried Out by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force

I particularly love this next song because someone very dear to me used to sing this with me over the phone at night.  He has such an amazing voice and I was honored that he would let me sing with him.

“Here we are, the two of us together
Taking this crazy chance to be all alone
We both know that we should not be together
‘Cause if they found out, it could mess up
Both our happy homes”

Secret Lovers by Atlantic Starr

This song reminds me of a friend who was in love with this girl, but she was always dating these other losers instead of seeing what was right in front of her face.

“And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel”

Lips of an Angel by Hinder

I just like this song.  It’s a good cheating song.

“When you make love, do you look in the mirror?
Who do you think of, does he look like me?
Do you tell lies and say that it’s forever?
Do you think twice, or just touch ‘n’ see?”

Love Bites by Def Leppard

Not entirely certain this song is about cheating, but I think it’s close enough with these lines:

“You seem very well, things look peaceful
I’m not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you fuck her?”

You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette

These are the rules. Five songs (do your best to stick to it, I listen to every mix). Stick to the theme (as best you can). Check out the other players (everyone wants to share their tunes with you). Create a mix, not a “hey look at all the cool songs I know” we’re not snobs, if you were our best bud and you were gonna make us a tape, what would it be? Twisted MixTape 33: This One is Epic!

Challenge hosted by:  Jen Kuehl of My Skewed View

This week’s theme is:  Songs that tell a story.

These are the rules: Five songs (do your best to stick to it, I listen to every mix).

My first pick for this week’s theme is “I Am Stretched On Your Grave“.  This song is actually a translation of a 17th Century Irish poem and was originally set to music in 1979 by musician Philip King.  The poem/song is about losing a love and not being able to get passed that loss.  The song was made popular by Sinead O’Connor in 1990, but I really like the Dead Can Dance version.

My second pick is “Me and a Gun” by Tori Amos.  This song is about being raped and the thoughts that go through your head during the act.

Third on my list is “Hold On” by Sarah McLachlan.  It’s about someone you love dying and being helpless to do anything about it.  It was inspired by a documentary of a woman whose fiancé was dying of AIDS.

Fourth is “Children of the Night” by Richard Marx.  It’s about children who are abused, neglected and abandoned and are forced to live on the streets.  It is about their plight.

Fifth on my list is “Piano Man” by Billy Joel, which is about people in a bar wishing their life was something other than it was.  While I love Billy Joel’s version, I wanted to share Colton Dixon’s version with you.  He did an amazing job.

Twisted MixTape 32: Obsession

I decided to go ahead and jump on the bandwagon of Twisted MixTape Tuesday.  Apparently this week’s theme is dealer’s choice.  I get to pick five songs of my choice and then link up on Jen Kehl’s lovely blog “My Skewed View”.  She even has been lovely enough to post all of the prompts up until December 3rd on her page.  I love that, because it helps me not choose songs for the Dealer’s Choice prompt that I may want to use later.

Okay, so, on to my picks.  I’m going to pick “Obsession” as my theme this week.

#1 Crush by Garbage – the entire song is really about obsession, but my favorite line is “You will believe in me and I can never be ignored”

Every Breath You Take by The Police – obviously this is a stalker song with lines like “Every step you take I’ll be watching you”

Follow Me by Uncle Kracker – this song is about obsession with drugs with lines like “And if you want to leave I can guarantee you won’t find nobody else like me”

How Am I Supposed to Live Without You by Michael Bolton – it’s a beautiful song, but when you really listen he is obviously obsessed with her “When all that I’ve been livin’ for is gone”

What Do I Have to Do by Stabbing Westward – “What do I have to do to make you happy? What do I have to do to make you understand? What do I have to do to make you want me?”

I hope you enjoyed my particularly Twisted Mix Tape.  Please come back next week for more.  Apparently we are doing songs that tell a story.
