“The Core” – Movie Review

Since I finished watching all the episodes of “Supernatural” that are available on Netflix, I decided to watch a disaster movie.  I don’t know why, but I like disaster movies.  Even the bad ones tend to get my attention.  Well, “The Core” was no different.

The Core

Basic premise:  Some disaster befalls the planet, a group of people must save the planet from utter destruction, several members of the group die in the process, one or two members of the group manage to save the planet but must then be rescued themselves as something prevents them from making it to safety.

Sound familiar?  That’s because it is the premise of pretty much every disaster movie ever made.  “The Core” really was no different.  However, it has it’s redeeming qualities.  The cast is the only thing that really sets this movie apart from being a horrible movie.

The group starts off with six key people:

Commander Iverson who is played by Bruce Greenwood.  He has a long list of credits, but you may best know him as Richard Burghoff from “Mad Men”.

Beck who is played by the lovely Hilary Swank.  Probably best known for her role as Maggie Fitzgerald in “Million Dollar Baby”.

Josh Keyes played by Aaron Eckhart who did an amazing job portraying Harvey Dent in “Dark Knight”.

Serge played by Tcheky Karyo who did an amazing job as Fouchet in “Bad Boys”.

Zimsky played by Stanley Tucci.  Stanley portrayed Dr. Kevin Moretti in “E.R.” many moons ago.

And finally we have, Brazzelton played by Delroy Lindo.  Delroy portrayed Bo Catlett in “Get Shorty”.

All of these actors are amazing in their own right.  The death scene of Serge is one that actually made me cry.  But it wasn’t any of these actors that made me love this movie.  It was a secondary character that I loved.  A computer hacker named Rat that was played by DJ Qualls.  The reason I love him?  Because he also played Garth in “Supernatural”.

DJ Qualls

I had no idea that DJ was in this movie when I started watching it, but once I saw him, I was fully enthralled.  He wasn’t a major role, but he was in it from beginning to end, so it was well worth watching just for him.  Now I must go search for other things that he has been in.

Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop – Share a Quote You Love

I think my ultimate favorite quote is:

Our Fingerprints

I first heard this quote in a movie called “Remember Me” starring Robert Pattinson.  I remember my friend wanted to see it really bad, but I was kind of on the fence about it.  It looked like a romance, and I’m not your typical girl when it comes to liking romantic movies.  If something doesn’t blow up, I get really bored.  But we went to see it anyway.

I fell in love with that movie.  I won’t tell you anything about it other than you should most definitely go watch it.  It’s actually on Netflix now, so go check it out!  You won’t regret it.  It starts off slow, but stick with it.  In the end, you will most definitely thank me for the recommendation.

This quote reminds me of all the people we can touch without ever even knowing we are doing so:

It reminds me that we can make a difference in so many lives:

It reminds me that every person we speak to, every person we make eye contact with, every person we hold, will make a difference in our lives and we will make a difference in their’s… no matter how small or insignificant that difference may be:

So go out there and remember that “Our fingerprints do not fade from the lives we touch.”

Big Hero 6

Last night, my kids and I decided to watch the much talked about “Big Hero 6” movie.  I can tell you that we were definitely not disappointed.  This movie had everything that all good movies should have.  It was heartwarming, funny, action-filled, depressing and wonderful!

I don’t want to spoil the movie for those who haven’t already seen it, so I won’t even mention the number of flaws that this movie had, but I do want to point out how much the characters reminded me of Teen Titans. (Although with the appearance of Stan Lee, I realized it was probably intended to resemble the X-Men… Every lover of the Marvel Universe probably hates me now…)

Big Hero 6

Teen Titans

The only one I couldn’t think of a match for was Baymax.

Anyways, I really enjoyed watching this movie with my kids.  I think everyone should see it.
