Daily Prompt: Eat, Drink, and Be Merry…

…for tomorrow we die. The world is ending tomorrow! Tell us about your last dinner — the food, your dining companions, the setting, the conversation.

“An asteroid is heading for Earth.  It is predicted that no one will survive the disaster.  There is mayhem in the streets.  Looters are destroying all the stores.  Chaos is all around us.”  ~Click~  Katherine turned off the tv.

“I can’t watch the news anymore.  It’s all doom and gloom,” she said as she tossed the remote onto the coffee table and plopped her little body down on the couch.  She began twirling her long brown hair with her fingers.  “We should throw a party!” she exclaimed.  “A huge blowout!  An End of the World party!  What do you think?”

Russell considered the idea for a moment.  “I guess we might as well.  We have nothing to lose at this point.  Who should we invite?”

“Everyone!  Your family, my family, all of our friends.  Hell, we can even invite strangers in the street.  If they can fit in the building, they can come to the party.  We should hurry to the stores before all the looters take everything.”  She jumped up and grabbed her jacket to protect herself from the chill air on this cloudy November day.

They made their way through the crowded streets to the grocery store.  Nobody noticed them and left them alone since they were too busy doing property damage or stealing electronics on the off chance the end of the world really didn’t happen.  The grocery store owner simply opened his doors and let them in.  He told them to take whatever they wanted and he stood guard at the door with his shotgun in hand.  He just didn’t want any trouble.

They loaded up bags with steaks and ground beef.  They continued with vegetables and condiments of all kinds.  Then they hit the liquor section, filling bags with all kinds of hard liquor and wines.  They decided to leave what money they had with the owner and they made their way back to their house.

Katherine started making the phone calls to invite everyone while Russell began putting away the groceries and preparing the food.  He was the cook among them.  Katherine somehow managed to burn water, so Russell wouldn’t let her near a stove.

Oddly enough, Katherine managed to reach everybody on their list and they were all more than happy to come spend the evening with them.  Everyone said that they were going to bring whatever food and alcohol they had left in their house, so it was going to be a potluck event.  Katherine was kind of excited about that because her mother made the best stuffed shells she had ever tasted.

While they waited for people to begin showing up and Russell continued to work on the menu, Katherine began compiling a playlist of music that included such songs as “1999” by Prince and “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve.  She also began setting up a bar with all the liquor and wine that they had gotten from the store.  At the last moment, she decided to invite the store owner to their party.  It turned out that he was a widow and didn’t have any children, so he was very happy to be invited to their party.

Everyone started to arrive and the first thing everyone went for was the alcohol.  Nobody apparently wanted to face the end of the world sober.  Music played in the background while they all gorged themselves on the food and told funny stories about their lives.  Nobody cried or expressed sorrow.  It was as if they were afraid to express those emotions in the last moments of their lives.

One moment they were all laughing over some story and in the next there was a large flash and a boom and then nothing.  The world ended with a whimper and a sigh.
